It turns out that Sibelius, for all we associate his music with the quintessential sound of North, is surprisingly unique and the expectation of Sibelius in others can harm the experience. That’s one of the mistakes to make with any Nordic or Scandinavian composer less famous than Sibelius: to expect they might be Sibelius-lite. The main course is the Second Symphony, Madetoja’s most successful and grandest and indeed a terrific work – into which the tragedies of the Finnish Civil War seep, as do the occasional sounds of Wagner ( The Flying Dutchman) or – less obvious – those of fellow symphonist, the Estonian Eduard Tubin. It’s a dramatic entry with timpani rolls and horn calls, containing what we might expect to hear in a Janáček opera over the most subtle hints of Sibelius and Wagner but also sweeping violins that would not be out of place in a Korngold score. It opens intriguingly with the Comedy Overture – conducted by the teacher and mentor of that mass of great Finnish conductors: the legendary Jorma Panula. As an introduction, it is the better choice not because of the budget price but because of the good mix of works. Download popular programs, drivers and latest updates easily.
